Does anyone know of an even remotely good imitation of SpeckledHi Pete,
Bustard? I have heard that Ozark turkey, peroxide bleached then tan
dyed, will work, but my attempts resulted in a weird looking "thing". Suggestions? Same for Indian crow and blue chatterer subs.
Thanks and talk to you all later... back to work.
For speckled bustard, you can usually find a good speckled turkey that will come close. But what you describe might be more for florican bustard with the tan and brown barring? If so, peacock secondaries or the barred secondary feathers from a golden pheasant tail (not the round spotted ones) work well.
For Indian crow? Red bishop is a good sub but still tough to find. There are a number of substitutes dyed by some salmon tyers I know that are very good.
For chatterer the best sub is probably kingfisher.
If you'd like any web addresses where you can find these subs, contact me off list. I can point you in the right direction.
