Rob: Your experience and expertise is valuable. I live close enough to
Colorado that I could become much more familiar with all these waters.
I wonder if you are familiar with the fishing around Estes Park and the
Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park. I am going to a reunion there in the middle
of June, and will probably have at least one full day or two evenings to
fish. Any insight (dry flies preferrably) would be greatly
appreciated.

Murf~
These are my home waters, and I can tell you that the
3 rivers you just mentioned are all completely
different from one another. Because of the water
level changes over the past few years they all fish
differently then they did even a few years ago.
However, they do all have the same biotic qualities
that any western stream would have in Baetis and Midge
patterns. I prefer Bwo's all year long except for the
dead of winter.
In June you can expect yellow stones, red quills and
possibly green drakes on the freestone parts of all 3
but to no real predictable occurence. Obviously
caddis (I prefer peacock) will catch fish then too. I
never have done too good with the mysis shrimp
patterns below the dams on the Blue or the Pan but
many people swear by them.
If I'm going fishing these days I stick to the
Pumphose streatch of the Colorado, the Roaring Fork
above 2-Rivers and the Poudre. Mostly I just strip
leaches and other big streamers. Had good luck on the
Poudre yesterday doing that even though the water was
off-colored.
I'll be glad to offer any additional info when the
time is closer and the hatches are more predictable.
Should be a good years for higher flows since the
water tables are up.

Have a good friend who is going to fish Roaring Fork,
Blue, Frying Pan and many more waters this summer with
stops in Aspen and Vail to play toursist for his
family. He has asked a number of shops for "hatch"
info and what flys he should tie for his trip in late
June through July. He told me no shops have been
helpful or provided any info. I said my buddies here
would do better than the shops he spoke with.
While I know some patterns which were productive for
me the last time out, many of you are much more in the
know of where to get such info and I'd like to get
this fellow to join the list. He's a good sort with a
heart of gold as he took us in one day in the
mountains when a thunderstorm prevented us from
pitching camp. We've been friends ever since.
Now Dan's a very good tyer and even a better catcher.
He studied under the eyes of George Harvey's close
friend Fred Reese years back. I'd like to help him
have an enjoyable trip. Anyone have some ideas?
Thanks!
