Well, I finally got a few hours to go fly fish
Saturday morning. I went up to the local state park
and was pleasantly surprised to see that many of the
weeds had died off in the most accesible of the
ponds...and at least the bluegill were cooperating.
No monsters, but caught 8 fairly easily in a slow 2
hour walk around the pond. The water is quite clear,
slightly tannin stained from the cypress, so you can
often see the fish as they hit. I did also see to 15"
spotted gar, (they weren't interested in my bluegill
bug) and one about 14" bass, going his own way (also
not interested). After 2 hours I had to stop, the
back was giving out, which happens when I walk without
my cane (taking it with me just makes it worse since I
have to bend over and keep picking it up). It was
enjoyable, but now every other weekend I'll be grading
about 50 tests. I think maybe I'll take my travel rod
up to my office and try the bayou behind the science
& math building during the week...I've occasionally
caught bass, bluegill and later in the summer ladyfish
there.
