Chuck,
This is not a bad way to start, with a kit. Then we can send you specific
stuff that's not there. Just make sure you get a good vise and good tools.
And don't be afraid to ask questions about each tool and options.

Just a reminder though. Get what you can from Byard (Linesend.com)- give
him first crack at it. After all, this is his site, and he makes his living
off of his material sales.

Byard understands 'penny-pinching', as we all must do it from time to time.

I'm in a unique position, as I buy and get materials in bulk for my giant
fly business. What I cull out and throw away would be a lifetime supply for
another tier. What I trim off of a big fly will tie dozens of little
fishing flies. That's why I send out so many kits to beginners- lots of
good materials, just not what I use or what I trim off. Anyone that's been
in my fly room knows what 'materialism' looks like.

I'm also on Whiting's Pro-staff, so I get some hackles that are rarely, if
ever, seen on the pegs in shops. Others I get in hi-grade because I make
trips to the farm to pick them out from hundreds, maybe thousands, of pelts.
And anyone can do this, if they're willing to make the trip and spend the
time in the bins. I also get promotional bulk hackle bags for give-aways at
shows, and some of these make it into the kits. But, like the co-op swap, I
always try to consider Byard in the deal.

As those who've been on the list for a while know, when I get new stuff,
like spey, midge, Wingers, cree, etc.- I open it up to any vfb'ers who want
free samples.

The vfb has a lot of generous folks on it. It's a great resource for a
beginner.
