Mark,
I think I have mentioned on the list that I have tied with Tom at
several Conclaves. At two of then I tied right along side of him and he
had me laughing all the time. We had a number of things in common one
being the love for fishing for Gills, another was flying. He loved the
little planes and we talked about the plane I built and the freedom in
the sky. I met Tom in 1993 and we corresponded for several years till he
moved back to LA. after his wife passed on. The Sowbug that he attended
was one of the last shows he did. I have all of his books, they are are
inscribed to me, I treasure them.
When I first met Tom, I still lived in Jersey and was getting ready to
move to Arkansas. Tom would write me about fishing with his brother on
the White in front of the house that we bought. He told me about a big
brown that was there. Months later when I moved, that brown was still
there, I got to see it a couple of times before we built our dock. I
think it was the same brown that lived under our dock for a while.
Getting late and I am rambling.

Yes, Tom was a great fellow to talk with. I'd gotten to know him a
lkittle bit from joining the local fly club, the Contraband Fly
Casters (and now I'm president of that...). He had a great sense of
humor. Iknew him for far too short a time, even though we lived in the
same town.

And I think that Mark D, would agree - the best part of the evening
was chatting with Tom. He was a really
neat fellow. He was complaining to me that they wouldn't let him
renew his pilot's license because he had
suffered a very mild heart attack. He hadn't been able to pilot his
plane for nearly a year so he sold it.
I asked him how old he was. He was 86 at that time!
Sadly, he died three months later.
