I doubt that the Whiting saddle hackle you're using is to blame. You mentioned that you use thin posts. That may cause the hackle to split or break. Have you got 2 minutes right now? Tie a post that has the diameter of a matchstick on to a hook and let's see what happens.

I'll try that when I go to the shop. They have a decent selection of Whiting, though they stock mainly the other one (Metz?sp?)
