All of them are fabulous . Saw Tony do some MAGIC with epoxy and a Japanese American tier whip up some shrimp that I would have eaten. Ginger Allen was tying with Tony. Some of the flies ever for Florida. Man they were great. Having said all that, the most impressive thing at the show was a total wacko that that lives among us. Our own DOCTOR DIMENTO. You guys have no idea what high regard DON ORDES is held in the fly tying world. He was invited all expense paid to tie at the world fair in Holland next yearduring this expo. Every celebrity sought him out to say hello or reminisce.OR TO GET A MOUSEWhat distinguishes him from the rest of of us is he is truly psycho.. No , Imean really psycho. I wont reveal all of his craziness , but he has renamed the Mesozoic Age, the MICEeazoic age and has actually tied flies from that time period. Seriously, He has a remarkable genius to take materials and use them in totally new and creative ways. The real pro's say they regard him to be among the top 5 most creative tyers on the planet. And he is funny and ashowman. We had a ball. Laughed all 3 days!! And learned so much from Don.I had a PhD in tying in 3 days. What a great time. Tom Whiting said we were the most effective guys he has ever had at the booth. Kept people coming to the booth and sort of drew them in and kept them there. BTW. when the booth came down at the end of the show, I left with an entire rolling suitcase FILLED with capes and saddles. Tom Whiting and his staff just kept bringing stuff over. I had to buy another bag there to get home.I think because Don and I are both businessman first and fishermen and tyerssecond, we knew we were there to sell hackle.. It was great to see and meet so many guys from this list and the FF@ list. We are a great family. I really look forward to meeting more of you in the future.
Jerry, i've been waiting goin' on three years to meet Don. Sure hope he
shows for the I.F.T.S. BTW, my favorite tyer on the planet is prolly Ted
Patlan. He's been my main influence and inspiration for a long
time........well over ten years i'd say. He tyes EVERYTHING to one degree or
another.......but i'm not really sure if he specializes in ANYTHING, lol.
The guy is totally nuts when it comes to the use of materials. He's use
ANYTHING! And he often does. It really doesn't matter at
all.........whatever's available. Most of his flies are stricktly related to
fishing and they WORK. But he also tyes a mean salmon fly, and i've never
asked him about whether or not they work, lol. They're just so beautiful
that i keep ém on the wall. He has some flies in vol.1. of Rare and
Unusuall. I've been fortunate to be able to watch him tye prolly 30/40 times
over the years. He tyed with us at the CJ. I have a lot of his flies
including what is undoutedly the first fly ever tyed in the new millinium.
(a long and funny story) .........mark
