Scotland. Definition of a "FISH" is SALMON !! There are no other "fish" in
Scotland.
Not even trout are called fish just "trout"
Game fishing is a wording set up by the hero's from the media ( are they not
wonderful people?). Its just to confuse people from Scandinavian countries.
Now in the UK game fish are references given to salmon, sea trout and brown
trout and
are fished for in rivers. Grayling are classed as coarse fish and have
different fishing seasons to trout , sea trout and salmon due to their
spawning cycle being the same as
coarse fish.
Grayling were for years seen as a threat to "game" fish rivers and were
slaughtered in there millions. This was because they were thought ot have
been responsible for the destruction of game fish redds and the eggs there
in. Infact its the other way round.
Some rivers still insist on any grayling being removed if caught. Thankfully
not many.
Coarse fish refers to any other freshwater fish. The reason they are called
coarse fish is because of their tendency to feel "coarse" or rough if caught
and handled during the
closed season or when the are spawning. (Fish biologist please explain)
As for hunting this was (until last February) done on horseback. In the
"dark ages" only the landed gentry had the horses to hunt from. Us ruffians
had to walk Or beat our way through the undergrowth. Hence the term beaters
on shoots nowadays. Hunting was generally with hawks or dogs. The hawks take
the smaller game and the dogs the deer.
When firearms came into the hunting scene then you "shot" birds as they were
sent towards you by the beaters. Stalking refers to creeping up to within
range of your rifle or gun to allow a safe clean shot at usually deer. Now
practiced mainly in Scotland as they have the most suitable ground for this
type of hunting.
So the media stole the word "game" tacked it on to ALL types of trout
fishing to make stillwater trout fishing sound "exclusive" and sell more
magazines to Scandinavian countries.
Game fishing is another example of good ole "Media Hype"

Back in the dark ages, there was game, small game, game birds. All
for hunting (or stalking or shooting, as the Brits make differences
in these branches of hunting, where germanic languages don't). All
for the nobility. Then there was fishing, for game species, which was
again reserved for the nobility, and for 'course' species, which was
allowed for the common people. Historically, game fishing in the
British isles included salmon and trout; it has since been extended
to grayling too. Anything else is coarse (roach, rudd, bream, carp,
pike, etc.).
The Americans extended the concept to include all fishable species.
There's no such thing in the US as game fishing vs. coarse fishing,
but there are game fish vs. non-game fish.
