Had my annual Yellowstone Lake fishing trip this week. The hatch was
good and the fishing was fast, l caught lots of big husky Yellowstone
cuts; this time the best technique was simply tossing out a couple of
pheasant tail nymphs (no added weight) into a pod of feeding fish. It
would have been a perfect trip, but on the way to Yellowstone I
opened my truck's hatch at a rest stop (the first one you reach in
Idaho heading north from Utah) and forgot to close it. I drove all the
way to Idaho falls with it open, stuffed full of fishing equipment and
camping gear. Only one thing fell out; my favorite 6-7 weight rod, a
Powell LGA. It can't be replaced because Powell has new ownership and
doesn't make them any more. To make matters worse, I had misplaced the
cap on the metal tube, so even if the tube had survived the fall, the
rod in its sock probably fell out.
Dang! Getting old and forgetful is a drag (and expensive).
I reported the incident to the Highway Patrol, but it would take a
miracle to ever get the rod back. If it survived the fall, it could be
sitting in the weeds for years until a clean up crew stumbles on to it.
However, I would much rather have someone find it and get some use out
of it than to discover it mashed to bits.
Well, as tragedies go this is indeed a small one, and life goes on.
And the fishing WAS great!
