Good Night all. Tony
My neighbor is a part time neighbor. He and his whole family are bait
fisher people. For years they have come up and fish for two weeks, never
asked about fly fishing but watched me fishing off my dock at times. By
chance, yesterday I needed some help and I gave Terry a call. He came
over and helped me for a few minuets. Before he left, he said, my
youngest was talking about flyfishing, can you help him. He is about 12
years old. I really figured it would be a couple of questions and that
would be that.
I told him to send Greg over and I would give him a casting lesson if he
wanted it. Greg came over and I got him started casting. It was kind of
a chore trying to get him not to break at the wrist like a spin caster.
He finally got the hang of it and started to get some line out. To my
surprise he just kept on casting even though it was getting dark. I
turned on the back yard lights and let him cast while I went to see his
dad. I asked when they were leaving, he said, in the morning. I told him
I was going to take my 8 year old grand daughter fly fishing for the
first time and I would be glad to take Greg along. His Dad said, we can
stay over another day, I will go along. Come this morning we woke up to
a thunder storm, I figured I would not be going. At 7:30 my neighbor was
here with Greg all ready to go. We left in a light rain shower and
agreed not to get on the water until the storm passed and was sure the
lighting had stopped. By the time we got to the creek, it had all
dissipated. The kids wet waded and we started fishing, You would know
the front that went through had given the fish lock jaw. We practiced
casting on the water then moved up to another section of the creek. The
sun came out bright and we finally started getting some hits. My grand
Daughter had a couple of gills on and lost them. Greg started to hook
up. His dad said, that looks like fun. Greg got into one of the big
carp, his dad was just jumping with joy. I will not go into all the
details of the rest of the morning but by the time we left, his dad was
casting a fly rod and catching gills. On the way home Ht asked me where
can he get a flyrod. We stopped at Dorber and he bought a couple of
graphite rods reels and all the rest of what they needed. The fly of the
day ws a sz 14 Chili Pepper. I told Greg to come over my house later and
I would show him how to tie a Chili Pepper. Greg just left with a full
set of tying tools and a lot of tying stuff. Hr said his dad though
flyfishing was a lot of fun and he is going to fly fish for trout, I am
tired but content, they are going to stay over till Monday to go
flyfishing again. His dad just came by and asked me if I would \ I think
I accomplished something today. My grand daughter wants to only fly fish
now.
