Due to
being a Swede and haven't had much to do with American books, I can't help you
on that front. I just wanted to say that lately there have been dropping in
newbie after newbie quite frequently... and it makes me glad to see
it.

If possible, find a local club or check with your local Fly
shop.
click on the fly tying menu at the left of the screen. This will
lead you from very basic to the most advanced with a weekly new FOTW (fly of
the week). All with excellent photos and text to guide you in your new
hobby.
All at your finger tips on your own computer, and the cost is
nothing. Never will you be charged anything for information found
there.
For any other questions you may and will come up with, almost
everyone here on VFB are willing to help you out. You just have to
ask.
