Well, it may be accreting extraterrestrial stuff at a slow rate (just
as some scientists argue that most of our water, and at least some of
our original biological macromolecules came from outer space ;-)),
but that won't be nearly enough to fulfil our growing fossil fuel
demand...
You're quite correct of course to state that IF you (we) want to
continue and increase our energy-rich activities, we should a] take
responsibility for that and b] potentially develop alternative
sources of fuel, or alternative energy sources altogether.
Whether drilling in sensitive ecosystems (and arctic ecosystems are
very sensitive, primarily because biology is so slow there due to low
temperatures) is a responsible solution to the very real problem
outlined above is quite another matter.
That diminishing dependence on outside sources of energy/fuel is a
good thing (whether for the US or for the EU) is without question.
