Mark: Good to hear your report. It sounds like most of your situation is more
positive than negative. We have been thinking of you, and all the others who
have been directly affected Katrina and Rita. We wish you continued good
luck in the recovery, etc.

I just talked to our landlord, and the house we are
renting came out ok, just a few shingles lost. the
big magnolia and front and the two pecan trees in back
survived. so it looks like we were quite lucky. the
dog kennel in back and the garage where the landlord
stores some of his stuff took a fair amount of damage.
the yard is strewn with trash that blew in from tghe
neighborhood. All in all, pretty good. We'll just
have to see what blew away when we get bakc. Mr.
Manning, our landlaord, came back early to take care
of the many rental properties he has around town.

Now the bad news. There are fish kills all over
southwest Louisiana. there are fish kills in Lake
Charles, Prien Lake and Calcasieu Lake reported. this
is presumably because of decompostion in the
waterways. There is not a lot lefdt in Cameron parish
south of Calcasieu parish where Lake Charles is
located. You probably have seen pictures of the town
of Cameron and possibly of Holly Beach . where I
usually go fishing on the gulf is 11 miles to the
west near the town of Johnson Bayou. From the
pictures I've seen, there is not much left of the
area. I've been able to recognize a lot of the
roadways and beaches and many structures are just
gone.

At McNeese where I work, there is mainly roof damage.
Kirkman Hall where the math, computer sci and
chemistry departments are took only mild roof damage,
and is one of the least damaged buildings on campus
(which was expected since it is a brikd faced steel
framed building). Today I have to go try to pick up
my paycheck from a Western Union office up here in
Texarkana. Everyone is still waiting for power to be
restored to Lake Charles so we can return and clean
up. We know we have a smelly job ahead of us, with a
refrigerator and a deep freeze to clean out
completely. But at least they are still there.
