Just getting settled in and back into the swing
of things, taking care of the birds. Had signed off for the past week plus, to
go fishing on the Selway down in Idaho at Lowell. Between 15 & 20 like
minded fly fishers were there and everyone caught fish.
I fished high up on the Selway which is one of my
favorite spots in the world. The go to fly of the week for me was a small (size
22) black ant, dry. All but two fish I caught were on a dry fly, most were
brought to hand using the ant. Was casting to the rise in a fairly fast flow
river. Was into a pool that had the bottom covered with all size and shapes of
rocks. Most were of the smaller size between 7 and 10 inches. There were enough
in the 12 to 14 inch size that made things interesting for me. I even fished one
day (Saturday) in the rain and managed to catch 11 fish which was my lowest
count per day but had the largest fish of the week in the rain. I had driven the
22 miles up river and had planned that if there were no rises I would not fish.
Well, one guy chose to rise while I was observing, so I suited up and went
fishing. Caught one fish right off the bat but the door shut and I had an hour
with nothing. All of a sudden a hatch came off and 10 were brought to hand in
less than 30 minutes.
All in all it was a fun week, just wish all of
you could have enjoyed the fishing with me.
I have planned on hosting a Regional Fish In,
there at Lowell Idaho next Fall, Sept 24th through the 30th. Will keep everyone
informed as I work out details. We are already booked in at the Three Rivers
Resort for cabins and camping.
Three Rivers Resort sets at the confluence of the
Locksa, Selway and N. Fork of the Clearwater so is a lot of different fishing.
Excellent fishing, reasonable rates for camping or cabins and very good
food.
