17 lb mono on a spinning reel mounted on a surf rod...when the waves and the current are that big, you need to put the fly rod away.  since it is about a 50 mile trip one way down to where I usually fish (if it is even still there...), you come prepared for any and all conditions.  Occasionally these trips turn into about 175 mile round trips searching for fishable water.  If there is too much sargassum seaweed (from east/southeast currents & wind) the surf becomes unfishable, and you might end up fishing the south end of Sabine Lake on the Texas/Louisiana border, or fishing the Sabine refuge south of Hackberry.  Occasionally you can fish these waters with the fly rod, when the gulf isn't fishable.  More times than not, it turns into a bird watching trip...
