IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM IANS EXPERIENCE.

1. Fish average over 2lbs.. so never use old tippet or tippet weaker than 5lb.

2. In SOuth Island. Generally one fish per 200m is not uncommon. Walk quietly, try to spot fish (a shadow, a swaying tail, etc..)

3. Water is generally clear, if you can see the bottom keep walking till you spot a fish.. it is easy to waste time fishing dead water

4. If the water is a little discoloured. Concentrate your fishing on the deeper holding water. Every good bit of holding water holds at least one good fish.

5. 90% of fish are holding deep and a weighted nymph is the choice. Grey/Brown beadheads #12 - #16 are best.

6. Water is clear use a small dry fly or a piece of greased wool as an indicator. Anything big and bright will spook fish.

7. Check all your knots regularly. you may only get one chance, for the day, dont lose a fish because of a bad knot. (use small barbed hooks.. you will ose fish on barbless...)

8. Do not be afraid to put pressure on the fish 5lb tippet can exert a lot of pressure...

9. wear dull drab clothes, olives, taupe, brown.. no bright colours whites, reds, yellows...

10. DO NOT FORGET POLAROIDS

11. Did I mention take plenty of nympohs .. well weighted. Fish generally hold in water 3 feet or over... you may see an odd fish in shallower water but the feeding fish are in teh deep green sections.. ie in current seams, heads of pools , in front of rocks.. etc..

12. take a big net (or no net). I prefer to beach my fish it is easier and safer than trying to get a big fish in a small net.

13 Expect smal numbers of big fish (not big numbers of small fish)

14. Don't change a fly unless you are sure you had a refusal. Sometimes the fish will not take unless you put it right in the zone... too much food for a fish to waste energy moving a long way.

15. If fishing a dry, dont be tooquick on the take... big fish take a Lonnnnnnng time to get their head down after taking a dry.... (my kiwi mate says, it is virtually impossible to be too slow). After the take wait , it seems like forever... imagine you are waiting too long.. and that is about right...
