It used to be (with the old bobbins ;-) ) that you got a hexagonal arbor with an internal thread that you could chuck in the jacobs chuck of your drill. You attached the spool (actually the spool and hub) to the arbor with the hub bolt, and loaded the spool with the drill. Instructions for the new bobbins say to chuck the hub's protrusion (for the quick release attachment) in the drill chuck...
