Folks;

I am looking for a readily available long stranded synthetic hair that
can be spun to form a boddy much like deer hair.  Has anyone used a
synthetic this way and are their any tricks to this?

Mike:
   I'll take the stance that you can spin synthetics.  The fly I tied for Ginger's Salt Water swap was done with spun Polar Plus.  I find that's the easiest to spin.  You can also spin materials like PolyBear and Egg Yarn.  You need to tease them a bit with your fingers as you spin them as they're not going to flare like deer hair.  The materials aren't hollow so what I do is treat the flies with floatant.  I like to tie them on light wire worm hooks for fresh water and the lighter salt water hooks, like Varivas which I'm now hoarding. I do mainly slider types which I coat lightly with silicone for salt water.  Fresh water, you can trim them to popper shape or Dhalburg diver shapes.  I prefer to leave the fresh water bug silicone free, though I will put a light coat on a popper face.  Polar Plus and Egg yarn make soft plushy flies. The PolyBear feels a little more like deer hair, and it has the sparkle built into it.
