Ed I thought of that one also but I have to agree with Don O. I don't think they migrate. With all the birds I see through my classic salmon fly tying... I've never seen a penguin. I would've seen it used somewhere but maybe Don O found a loophole. I've seen some pretty obscure birds and I even shop the dealers from across the big blue pond. I think Don O may be able to find his answer at Somerset. There will be some pretty fancy Salmon fly tyers there. Someone recently passed me an 11 page email of typed bird skins and feathers a collector was selling. The gentleman selling them for him will be at the show also if there are any on the market he would have them. I'll send Don O in his direction. I thought I was getting pretty good at this but I didn't know half the birds he was selling. I figured if I didn't know what they were I didn't need them. :) If I have a question about them I take the safe road and avoid it. It's just not worth it. Are you going to be at Somerset? Deb It's always risky to jump in when I haven't read many of the previous posts on this subject. However the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 and ammendments to it cover all kinds of birds, probably penguins as well. There are some birds that are exempted such as the starling, rock dove and a couple others. BTW I was told by a NYS wildlife biologist that in NY state I could use "found" feathers of legal non-migratory game and birds for fly tying as long as there was no sale (or gifting) of the flies.
