Glen
my thingking (without trying ) was that putting the balance an inch above the grip would mean that on the presentation cast, the rod would lay itself down more easily.. it would also mean that with less line out than a full line the rod would be balanced...
One of my first combos was reel heavy in balance which gave me wrist problems..
In testing my current set up i found it was close to as you describe, with the balance point , a little above the grip.. (and no longer have wrist issues)
cheers ian

Ian, I like you to take one of your lighter reel so the
balance is one inch ahead of the grip. Because you may not have a lighter reel
with the proper line size just place your regular reel with the proper line size
on the ground and use the unused reel connected to the rod.for a different
balance. The balance you express here for me is very hard on the wrist and
forearm ,I mean painful. What you express here is what been preach and the
standard balance system more then twenty years ago and takes more down force on
the wrist and forearm. Try a tip heavy balance rod to advoid the extra stress
.Like hearing your views.....Glenn

Subject: [VFB] Rod/Reel balance..
In thinking about some basic physics .. the perfect balance would seem
to be such that with the full amount of line out of the tip of the rod, the
rod would balance in the midpoint of the grip..(i.e no turning moment). This
implies that when casting their wouldnt be too much twisting pressure on the
wrist forward or back on the rod.
If you had all the line wound back on the reel, then the rod should be a
little reel heavy...the ballance point would be lower down the grip...
thoughts ?
