Hans,
There is a grain of truth in what Eric says about joint pain and vegan diet. One type of arthritis can be alleviated by avoiding meat which has something to do with uric acid or bile if memory serves. My uncle was crippled by this type of arthritis and went vegan for 20 years. His severely distorted and painfully swollen joints went away except for a small amount of visually evident twisting about the joints of his fingers. He now resides in a nursing home where he has no choice but to eat some meat and animal products but has not complained of recurrance.
What all this has to do with tying flys I don't know so I think Eric should host a fly swap of patterns which can have no animal products therein whatsoever and Hans should be the rules arbitrator.
This reminds me of a caddis pattern I used to tie using the matured and open seed pod's white fluff from a cardoon plant (looks almost exactly like an archtichoke and is closely related). The fly floated great but fell apart quickly as the fibers were very brittle. I DID catch trout on it though.
Well, gotta go bleed the turkey so it doesn't taste like mud tomorrow. Got a wild one, road-killed just down the hill this morning with decent lead wing feathers and intact tail grouping. Saturday, we're going to .22, gutt and singe the neighbor's hog... get that boar ready to sugar cure and hang him in the neighbor's smokehouse. Speaking of delicious sizzling meat, Lina needs to turn the rabbit frying upstairs as I can smell it's time to flip em. Oh... I'm just down here in my tying room with my ceramic rake to the mask. ...okay, so there's no rabbit frying upstairs (sniff) but I still have a mask here to rake. ;-) Buggs? Is that you???

Hans and Niclas. Being vegan does not mean I am against using animal products on flies. It means much research has convinced us we will be able to cast our creations to some of God's most artful work, admire their beauty, release them, and neither us nor them will endure more pain from the experience. It means my joints won't ache after a day at the stream or lake, I can remember the day and if I can avoid being hit by a truck, I can build a lot more memories. We love it and we wish everyone could enjoy it like us. We do wish a Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.
