PLEASE CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG

I BELEIVE that classic Speys are tied with feather wings tied low like a roof over the body and are hackled with long fibred hackle up the body "palmer" style. The actual flies originate on the river Spey in Scotland and the hackles were from a local chicken suprisingly called Speyside hens. The classics also included feather like heron for the hackle. Nowadays people use good qaulity schlappen as a sub for the hackle. The wings are usually mallard feathers or teal.
