Water, sunscreen, hat, long sleeve shirt, zip-off pants, more water
(Hint- freeze bottled water; you have to have two out to keep up with
need, but no ice needed = lower weight.) Decent shoes - any oysters
where you're going?
No beer - leave it in the truck as a reward
two rods - here in Texas its a 6 and an 8 ,
extra reel maybe a sink tip.
appropriate flies, but not too many boxes
pliers and/or boca
flats or deeper water?
whistle, PFD, mirror, first aid
extra paddle in group
anchor or Texas Toothpick (long stick driven down thru scupper hole) on
flats
anchor or drift sock on deeper drifts
compass or GPS - 2 in group
strap evrything down that you don't want to lose
And tell someone where you're going and when you expect to be back.
Maybe some of you guys have heard of the Extreme Edge Fishing
Tournament? Its a kayak only tournament held in several places across
the gulf coast. Not flyfishing only but they have a division. I don't
do serious tournaments, but -
Last April here in Texas it was already scheduled. The weathermen said
a strong norther was due in around two o'clock, so the Tournamnet folks
said they were ending at 12:00. Well. at 9:15 the wind was out of the
South at 10 MPH great for here. At 9:20 it was from the north at 55,
dropped 30 degrees, and solid rain and lightening for about 3 hours. Of
55 in the tournament, 25 had to be rescued by the Coast Guard or others,
most had the scare of thier lives, some boats are still out there in the
Gulf, but luckily only one injury requiring hospitalization - fell on an
oyster reef.
moral? watch the weather

What do you guys who kayak take and use for fly fishing gear on the kayaks?
What else do you take in the way of gear for long days on the water in
remote areas?
I'm outfitting my Mokai now and making a list of stuff to bring to the
Florida and the Keys.
