Wes,

As a father of 5 and grandfather of 3 come March (yes, I want to hear some congratulations on my oldest daughter giving me a grandson this March finally after 2 of her sisters beat her to it), don't think your 14 year-old needs to be fed anything short of the adult version.

As an adult, I like lots of color pictures to get me interested in something new.  Pretty colored fish and flys by a sexy young couple in the latest Eddie Bauer edition Orvis everything.  You can bring him to earth later.

From experience, find a sure thing kind of place and make sure the cast is very short and step back the minute they have any clue.  Let them learn while you stand back and they'll let you know when they want help.  My littlest caught 70 bluegills on a green weenie the first time.  She likes to fish but is not serious about flyfishing yet.  She will be.  She went from rap to country this year and fished with the gang a lot.  I'll put a bet out that she's casting a 4 wt by next fall.  Takers?

Subject: [VFB] Starter book for an early teen
Date: Sat, 10 Dec 2005 11:25:29 -0800
Hi VFB,

Next August, I am going to have the opportunity to host my nephew Josh
(who lives in Denver) and his sister Jamie at Sugar Creek Ranch in
northern California. Josh likes to fish, but has only had bait
chucking opportunities, never has used a fly rod or done fly fishing.

I would like to send him an "intro to flyfishing" book scaled and
geared to someone who is 14.

Can someone please suggest a good starter book, with clear
illustrations and photos?

Thanks!
