Same here.. I was watching a Poul Jorgenson Video,
and He'd slap the saliva on the feather, fold it back, and WALLA!!!!!! Made it
look SIMPLE LOL.. Big feathers and hooks are not so bad for my, but when
trying to fold back 14-16 size.. I get thread tangled everywhere, and barbs
going in all directions. it looks like,, instead of spinning deer hair, I
was trying to spin hackle LOL, Chuck

Rodney,
If you make the Sowbug I will be glad to show you how to fold a
hackle.
Chuck,
I don't know what it is, but I have a heck of
a time trying to "fold" hackle... So basically I do the same and
also make a couple "extra" wraps to thicken it... There's a tying
instructional on FAOL by Ron Lucas, who shows the procedure of "folding
hackle" and he does recommend that if you have a hard time "folding"
hackle to do just that, strip one side of the feather and then tie it in,
but you have to make a couple extra wraps of hackle because it's quite
sparse...

Subject: [VFB] Hackle tying
proceedure
Folks: I don't wanna make any late, great tyers
turn over in their graves, or any hear keel over, but I have tried
something that seems to work well for Me, but have never read or heard
of anybody else doing it. Seems that whenever I try to tie in wet
hackle, I ALWAYS grab barbs with the threads, and they end up going
frontwards, backwards, sideways, all over but straight... So... I
stripped ALL the barbs off one side of the quill. Tied it in so the
proper side would be forward when it was tied. Allowed twice the quill
length to make up for the missing barbs, and then just wrap it around
the shank. Works like a charm... Anybody ever done this???
