Depends on the fly size, I bought a package of craft wire from one of the big craft chains (Michaels?) that I like, 10 bucks for 8 or ten spools in all different colors, a very fine wire I can use down to size 16 or even 18. It was in the bead department, same as ultrawire only loads cheaper. I have also for years carried a fly tied using the strands of copper wire from an old extension cord. Nuce fly but too bright for most conditions. Sinks like a rock though.

Subject: [VFB] wire body flys
After reading a article about wire body flys I decided to add them to my arsenal of flys and I was wondering if there were any general rules as to what size wire to use for what size hook.
