Thanks, Rodney and David!  They're both good ideas - they both sound about right.  I found a picture online, but no attached recipe.  (The webpage with the picture is http://reelflyfishing.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=posting&mode=topicreview&t=782&popup=1 ; no affiliation... the fly in question is in the first picture, nestled against a real nymph in the bottom center of the petri dish). 
 
My guess is it's a biot body with a "puff" of dubbing at the hook's head.  Ideas/ suggestions? I think I'll register at the site in question just to send the poster a e-mail asking for the recipe...
