Murf,

Yes, ornery D.Lewis.  When I bought the fly rod blank from him a few years ago, we must've talked on the phone for an hour.   He keeps telling the list he's getting more and more deef, but he seemed to understand me well enough.  It seems he went to school in Pittsburgh and talked to me of the Squirrel Hill Tunnels and different traffic situations down there.  It was a very pleasant conversation.  He often talks of the Mossy and his Mennonite neighbor/friend and I've thought that it would be great to visit Dave and Stump, but I think I'd rather skip the fishing there and scratch a few cows heads instead.  Making my mark there otherwise would be counterpoint.  I'd love to have one of his rods and a used one was once for sale at a local fly shop that I oggled over several times, but couldn't afford.  I know his health for making new rods isn't getting better due to his inhaling the nasty epoxy fumes all those years.

To keep this on point -- Chuck - one other way to get the rod you want at a low price is to either contact a local builder or put one together yourself - I hear it's just as addicting as tying flys!!!

Ornery ole Dave Lewis?  Only have 3 rods built by my friend Dave.  I say ornery as he gets testier every year about encroaching humans out west.  He built me rods on Pacific Bay, Lamiglas and Sage blanks... all great rods in their categories.
Gotta write him and get him going.  He writes great stories too.

Jerry,

I must've missed that one.  I've never built a rod to date, but I have a blank bought from the infamous D.Lewis that will one day my missus' first rod.  It's nice red 2 pc 4wt that will do good on local trout streams or the bluegill pond.  I don't have the free space to put threat to graphite as of yet.  Rick built me a 9' 2pc 3wt that is really fast.  Really fast.  I've put 5wt DT line on it and it'll toss 1/2 of that line w/o thinking or straining.  Rick razzed me about taking it to Erie and breaking it in for me on steelies -- I didn't let him, though I've done it just to say that I have.  I also had a net partner that day too.  And if I understand Mr. Lewis, it's still looked at fondly and maybe taken out once a year for a good smile.
