I use a deer mask, I assume an eastern whitetail, for the wings on all my caddis patterns.  It was suggested to me by the owner of a local fly shop many years ago when I came in looking for deer hair to tie the then new CDC and Elk.  He said if I were planning to tie a lot of caddis then a deer's mask would cover most of the wing colors that I would need from very light to very dark in the mask and I wouldn't need a collection of deer hair patches.  It came in very handy for Byard's first huge caddis swap.  I've gone through one, and the second one will probably last me a few more years.

I have a question regarding Mule deer masks.
Can anything useful be done with them except for some of the longer hair
underneath??
