I've been thinking about building one more fly rod, I'm pretty sure its going to be 8' 6" 2 pc.  but other than that I'm confused I've seened  the same size rod  listed for line weights from 3,4,5, and 6 weights  and actions listed from moderate, moderate fast and fast  action. Anybody have any thoughts, coments or questions  . Ed

Where are you fishing and what are you going to be fishing for?  My rods are in a fairly narrow range of weight.. I have 5, 6 and 8 weights. They range from 7 1/2 foot(5 and 6 wgt)to 9 1/2 foot  8 wgt.  Two are 4 piece( 5 and 8)  The rest are two piece.  All but one are graphite, one is fiberglass.  I've built all but two myself.  One I got in a rod swap.  The other I bought because I needed a 4 piece 8 wgt to take with me to Guam in a hurry.  All are moderate action but the one I got in the rod swap and that's a fast action.
I know there's always a lot of discussion about what a suitable weight rod is for such and such a species.  If your planning on fishing just for trout on small to medium streams then you might want to consider a 3 or 4 wgt.  If you're like me and fish for a variety of species, then a 5 or 6 weight would be a better choice.
How good a caster are you?  What's the action on the fly rods you're using now?  A moderate action is more forgiving of bad casting habits, that's why I like them.  They take longer to load than a fast action.
I use the 4 piece 5 wgt most of the time.  On any given trip to my local creek, I can be fishing for sunnies, trout or bass.  If I going lake or large river fishing I take the 9 foot 6 wgt.
The 8 wgt is mainly reserved for salt water or when I'm fishing for pike.  My $0.02.
