Deb, Seafood Gumbo in Israel? Isn't that like trying to find good matzoh balls in Houma, La.?
Deb, I've lived away from New Orleans since 1973, and although I've had gumbo at many restaurants away from there, rarely has it tasted even remotely like home. I make it quite often, as that's the only way I can get real gumbo (other than visiting home). My mom says my seafood gumbo is second to none, and she's from Houma and full cajun, so that's a compliment. The truth- I recently ate at a restaurant in Denver named 'Gumbos". I ordered appetizers of red beans and rice, seafood gumbo, shrimp Creole, and a main of shrimp po-boy. The shrimp po-boy was one of the better ones I've had outside N.O., but I sent the rest back as inedible (for a Cajun, at least), and the chef came out to 'chat'. He wasn't even from the South, so I haven't eaten there again. A pretty good place in Denver is Papadeaux's, and most of his stuff is pretty good, but again the gumbo just didn't cut it. For the Sutherners from Bayou Cuntry, I enjoy: Real Red Beans & Rice with Andouille sausage Boiled seafood- all kinds and everything else thrown into the pot Real roast beef po-boys (on real French Bread) Any kind of fried seafood po-boy Crawfish & shrimp Etoufee Seafood Gumbo, turkey/sausage gumbo Shrimp Jambalaya Crawfish Bisque (here's where the shell stock comes in) Alligator Sauce Piquant Snow Cones (only those who've had them would know) Stuffed artichokes, peppers, merlitons, eggplants, crabs, and on & on.... I think they threw all the stuff they cleaned off the regular meals and put it in a pot. They even put the crab shells in. It was like eating egg shells in your scrambled eggs. Uuuugh! I didn't finish mine and I'm usually not a finicky person. I was expecting to pull out an old license plate or a shoe any minute. Regards, Deb
