Yeah, I know. Without a size reference, it's
hard to tell just how small they are.
Just send me a smattering of the smallest hackles
you have. I don't need a lot, not that many hooks left. Need
brown.
I sent Paul Mariner a sample of the thread I
use. It comes sfrom the core of a clothesline. It's so fine, a
strand of it floats away- really. just like a spider's web that they
parasail with. Makes 14/0 seem like rope. I'll bet this stuff won't
mic.

Unbelievable! And I've looked at the entire sites at Hans'
danica/flytier site and untill I saw the one in your hand did not remember how
small they really were. I have a box of Mustad 32s I bought which I owe
Byard that still elude me. I know they weren't tossed but simply lost
among the infinite amount of tying stuff I have accumulated.
DonO, if
you provide me with a standard measurement (what fraction of a millimeter
barb?), I'll pluck you as many #32 hackles as I can and mail them to you...and
I DO have some that small. You may have them as I stop at 26. I
have tied 28s but can't see well enough anymore. Funny, I can tie
smaller flys better than larger ones..to a degree. I've been using those
tiny neck hackle for wings recently since Tony shared a spool of 10/0 Gudebrod
with me. Guess I'll have to buy out all of Byard's 14/0 Griffiths since
I always maintained it was the finest. I will say that I have yet to use
a micrometer on the two but Paul Marriner has I'll bet.

There's some photos here of 32's, but not the
one I sent to TOm. I've done Wulff's, trudes, wets, an reg
dries. THe hardest thing to find & get right is #32 hackle.
And now the ol' eyes just ain't what they used to be. I can still tie
them, but I have to tie when my eyes aren't tired, or else they have a hard
time focusing.

I'm crushed they didn't show a picture of the #32 with swept back
wings. How could they tell they were swept back?
Microscope? Got a pic at fantasyflys.com?

I met Tom Zacoi years ago when he
obtained a few of my flies for his
collection, which is really quite awesome. His fly-boxes were
featured on the cover of Flyfisherman magazine years ago. Does
anyone know him? He's in the Pittsburg area. Heck of a
nice guy- almost as nice as Byard.
