" When I first began trout fishing I carried a pocket fly-tying kit in my jacket. Liz Greig had taught me how to tie "in the hand" and when a fly came on the water that I couldn't match from my flybox, I'd whip out the kit and with a fine dramatic flourish and cook up an imitation. This monkey business impressed some of my more insouciant companions, but the trout regarded it as sheer dam-foolishness, and gave most of my ad-libbed creations the go-by. Now, in my dotage, I carry a reasonable assortment of sizes and patterns in my flybox and I figure any trout that doesn't like my selection can go patronize some other angler."

"Being able to read trout streams is just as valuable to a fly fisherman as the
ability to read a defense is to an NFL Quarterback."
