Probably some type of midge. So are you ready to start tying size
20's? I don't live that far from a river and every so often in the
warmer when I'm tying at night some midges will make their way through the
screen and wind up on my tying desk. I've been able to pop them into small
clear plastic jars, and use them as models. The ones I've had land range
from size 14 to size 28. Came up with a real simple pattern for
them. Used a TMC(Tiemco)101,
wrapped some black thread(10/0) on the shank for the body, tied in some
thin hair like material for the wings(spinner style). Wrapped black CDC over the
wing tie in point for the thorax. Tied in some gray CDC for the
antennae. Up on the VFB I have a pattern called the Wissahickon
Midge. I usually fish it in size 22. One day when fishing on the
midge's namesake, I was amazed as a hundred of or more dimples appeared on
the surface as fish started feeding on emerging midges, tied on one of the
midges and immediately started catching sunfish, Red Breast, Greenies, Pumpkin
Seeds and bluegill along with the occasional trout. What was funny is that
the sunfish were more discriminating than the trout. You haven't been
insulted until a sunfish ignores your carefully tied size 22 midge.
