I'm still here sitting alone in the Ramada in Mountain home. Pretty quiet
around here now that everyone is gone (Alan, Buck and Larry might still be
here). Sunday I had a good time hanging out with Alan and the gang who kept
me from being stranded (Larry took the rental car back to Little Rock and y
ou
can't rent a car here on Sunday). On Monday I had a car scheduled for noo
n
but when I walked over to get it found out they wouldn't have one until 2:0
0.
I had a fishing appointment with Dean Darling at Bull Shoals at 1:30, so th
e
girl at Enterprise drove me up in her car to make things right. Dean and I
had a nice pleasant day of fishing in the cold, wind and rain. When we
arrived they had just turned off the generators and we had the entire place
to ourselves (no one else was crazy enough to be fishing in that weather).
I
caught a fish using Dean's fly and techniques on about my third cast, but D
ean
"cursed" us by saying "I hope that isn't the only one" (it was). However,
I
really enjoyed myself, I had "dressed for success" so the weather wasn't
bothering me, I was learning a lot about fishing the White at the hands of
a
gentleman who fishes it just about every day, and with every cast I thought
about my good friend Larry who lent me the rod I was using (I had left mine
in the back seat of my wife's car on departure).
Actually, the fishing was fast in one regard. The wind died down and fish
started rising to an invisible hatch. We couldn't see anything in the air
or
the water, but fish were rising everywhere. We threw everything at them an
d
had occasional takes (mostly on soft hackles) so that kept the interest hig
h
and kept us from being cold or bored. When you know the fish are there, an
d
are getting strikes, you always feel you will catch one on the next cast,
and are having fun. Heck, I enjoyed the rhythm of casting unweighted flie
s
(almost all of my fishing at home is done on the bottom of the river).
About 45 minutes before sunset the horn sounded and they turned on two
generators, so I got the entire White river show.
All and all a pleasant day and a good memory. Dean brought me back and I
treated him to a dinner that tasted better for the friendship and memory of
rain, water and fishing.
Today I finally get the rental car and will head down to spend the day with
Tony. We might go fishing if weather permits, but I'll be happy no matter
what.
My wife kept telling our friends that I was going on a fishing trip, I
corrected her and told her this was a "meeting friends trip". If this was
a
fishing trip then I caught two $500 dollar fish! But it wasn't. It was a
trip to make new friends, and enjoy hanging out with old ones, and as such
it has been priceless.

I got home on time. Uneventful travel, except I got very tired of
sitting in the rental car, airport, and on the plane. It was a great
time meeting all the people that I have been e-mailing for five or
six years. Thanks to Tony and all the people at the North Arkansas
Fly Fishers. Next year is the tenth anniversary of the Sowbug. Here
is the open invitation for anyone traveling to or through Utah. Give
me thirty minutes notice, and we'll all go fishing.

Yes it was a blast.
We had a ball with Nick all week.
Got him out fishing, he sunburned and was real red
around his face and neck.
He became an Arkansas REDNECK.
Too much to tell right now.
Will be getting with Tom Davenport today and tomorrow.
It is cold and raining so no fishing today.
Had the bunch here yesterday before they leave today.
Spent some time with Murf last night.
I think we had 24 VFB members at the show.

Got home from Sow Bug at 5:30 two hours later than
planned. Terrible
thunderstorms all across I-20 east of Dallas. Then
two big traffic jams
south of Dallas added the other hour. Never have
seen I-35 so clogged.
I pray the others travelling home today made it
safely. Some were
worried about snow.
Had a great time at Sow Bug and got to be with some
VFB buddies. To
make a long story short. IT WAS A HOOT ! NIck is
now officially a
REDNECK, in more ways than one. I'll let someone
else tell ya'll about
that though. Nick is very proud of his REDNECK
status, and he even
Hepped me out a time or two during the show. :-P
More detailed report later.
Good to be home again!
