Without a doubt the number one advance in Fly tying I can think of is GENETIC HACKLE. When I started tying all you could get were these horrible Indian cock necks with brittle stems and lousy feathers. A really good neck would tie about a dozen real nice flys and a couple hundred flies who's only use was as tree ornaments.
Synthetics period but mostly dubbing. Once again as a kid we were always looking for the weird pink bellied Norwegian possum fur fron the left hind leg af a possum hit by a car at 11:00 pm on October 10th. Because that was what the pattern called for. Now the variety and quantity are mind numbing. Does anybody remember cutting a patch of fur of the hide and carefully removing all the guard hairs to get a nice clean body? THREAD once again when I started tying you had a whole rainbow of Danville 6?0 black thread to choose from. Now no matter how many spools of thread I buy I never have the right weight or color. So I just buy more thread. Many other things have changed, graphite, breathable fabrics, GORE TEX etc. One other change has also occurred that most people will probably miss but may well be the most important of all. As a whole water quality has dramatically improved. Fishing, expecially for trout is far better now than ever. Clean water and catch and release has really made a difference. The good old days were not really that great, anybody remember the Detroit River catching fire? Or the wide held belief that Lake Erie was so polluted that our grandchildren's grandchildren would still be cursing us for that huge dead open sewer?
