Well as everyone does the occasional
" Todays..." type thing I thought I would fill
y'all in on my day
today.
It actually started yesterday but
what the heck! My fishin bud and I decided to go
to the Spring FlyFishing show. It is
being held for the first time in Newark
Nottinghamshire. As that is around 3
hours away we drove up on friday and stayed
in a motel. The list of attendees was
impressive with the likes of Tim Trexler
Martin Westbeek and Henk Verhaar
llisted as tyers. Sadly Martin could not make it
and I believe that Tim was similar.
Dissapointed at not seeing them but the rest
of the day was great. Personal tuiton
in the methids for Henks detatched body
Wally Wing mayfly was superb. Then we
met Hermon Broars who makes some of the
most fantasic pike flies. He is a
very nice guy. I wore my IOFF cap which Byard has
signed. Hermon saw it and said "I
know this man". Well impressed that I had his
autograph ! LOL Jens Pilgaard was
doing demos on his winging methods and I was
very impressed with his origami
method. As with most good things the ideas are
simple. That goes too for Henks
method with the detatched body and Wally Lutz's
wing method. What they dont give you
any idea of however is the ammount of
THINKING that has gone into the
ideas. We all do it I guess but I realised today for
the first time since I started tying
that I basically dont think WHY I am doing things
and that I effectivly just throw
stuff on a hook. Sure they work but with more thought
they would probably work even better.
The other tyers in attendance were
Gordon Mackenzie, (Tony S I will email you off
list), a young guy called Long
Nuc from Norway who I believe is still a teenager and
who ties THE most fabulous salmon
flies you could wish to see. Lots of other stuff to
see with demo's, forums and of course
the sales stuff. Among all these highlights I
also got meet "Mr Vice" Lawrence
Waldron of the LAW vice fame. Guys if you never
saw one its THE most good looking
uncluttered pice of vice engineering. I spoke to
him for around 30 minutes and was
NANOMILLIMETRES from buying one! LOL
All in all a GREAT day, great company
and great tyers. Thanks Henk !
