All of our rivers are blown out. This was our spring break week, but
bad weather or honey do's on the best day kept me from making the
drive to the Green River (5 hours away) that I'd hoped to take. In
desperation I ended up taking my light weight kick boat to a local
urban pond to fish for planted rainbow trout. It turned out to be a
fun morning, the fish were rising and I caught a half dozen casting a
couple of nymphs into the rise ring and stripping back.
In addition, this pond was revitalized a couple of years ago, it was
drained, it's depth increased, and small islands created in the
middle to encourage cattail growth. The result was an amazing
amount of wildlife for a pond 30 feet from the freeway. I was
floating with mallards, geese and pelicans, all wild, along with red
winged blackbirds and an occasional muskrat.
Eventually they plan to install a sound wall to quiet the freeway
noise. The pond is a warm water fishery, but they plant put and take
trout in the spring while the water is cool (I left the ones I caught
for the kids who are the main reason the pond was developed).
It is the only one around that allows float fishing, which is the
only practical way to fly fish it anyway... in less I can come up
with that power bait pattern (that might make a good addition to the
Baits Motel, Don, although your version would probably wear a cape)!

Got a call from a friend asking how Crooked Creek was
fishing. I told him that it was fishing real good. He
wanted to know if he made the 2 hour drive up here

were in the creek by 2 PM. The wind was blowing a gale
and the creek was high but wadeable and clear.
(Nick)not like you saw it.I was fishing one of my
bamboo rods. More on that later.
On about the third cast I had a hit but no hookup
Worked my way up to a chute with no action. I figured
it would be one of those days. Well it was not. On one
side of the chute there was a gravel bar. I got up on
the bar and made a cast into the chute. Hook up. That
is the way it went for almost an hour. I never moved
from that spot. On the 7 th Smallmouth I broke 9" off
the tip of my rod. The tip broke right at a snake
guide. I found that the snake guide acted as a tip top
and I was able to cast quite well with the rod as it
was. I kept on fishing and caught five more
Smallmouths. Then like a light switch, it quit. I got
a few bumps but no takes. I fished that same spot for
about another hour and changed flies, still no takes.
Tried another chute, still no hits. My friend down
stream from me was not doing much either. After about
another hour with nothing doing, I saw David heading
for the truck, he had a 2 hour trip after dropping me
at my house. As I came by the first chute, I made my
last cast and picked up another Smallie.
All fish I caught today were Smallmouths in the 9 to
13" range. Landed 13 fish and Long line released quite
a few more. What fly did I catch them on, well I am
sure you all know. LOL
