  I've always used eyes on my bait fish patterns, fresh and salt water.  Over the winter I just started incorporating red material into the salt water patterns, just behind the eyes.  I'll probably work this into my larger fresh water patterns.  Not sure how it will look on flies smaller than 3 inches.
