I use 8/0 thread mostly as I tie mostly smallish trout flies (#10 - #18).
On Bigger flies like #6s and #8s I will sometimes use a 6/o thread. I generally do not try too much tension. I would suggest moderate tension.
If I am tying SWF Iuse a bigger stronger thread so have to use more tension. Some times I half hitch as I go for security.
On GLobugs, I use Kevlar thread and lots of tension... to mke sure I get a nice pom pom.
