Glenn: Thanks for the info.. I'll try that.. I know on the DVD I have with
John Perry, he does the lasso thing on the base of some wings to give them a little more sturdiness, and to control the angle a little better I think he
said.. So, on the "spent" wings, they are "swept back" vs Straight up or
nearly straight up??? I couldn't find that special feather in Don O's box he sent Me, but I did find a bunch of mallard feathers like this in there, so i have plenty of those. Plus, some came in my starter kit from last year and I have just been waiting on a good pattern to use them on.. Maybe this can be
that pattern. Thanks again, Chuck

instructions

I hated the day some 25 plus years using hackle tips for the Adams dry fly ,there was two flies that could have been tied with just the wing material
,so many of us in those days used Teal barb flank feathers and they held
up
very well .then again many didn't know how to tie such wings out of wood
duck ,teal and mallard flank side feathers. Okay here goes, figure out the
length of wing and where the base is tied in ,that part of the flank
feather ,let say on wood duck , the amount of fibers is equal to 1 1/2 gap of the hook for one wing ,two wings are twice that .now as the mallard has
thinner fibers add more ,try 2 times the gap of hook for one wind ,twice
for
two . from here you adjust the gage amount to suit what you feel is right
Besides using the figure eight to divide the wings I also lasso or circle
a
turn or two near the base of EACH wind separately.. Now if the wing isn't
square up .I take the tip of my hackle pliers and twist them back into
position. Always set the wings at the base with a drop of head cement .
Many
Adams were tied with spent wings and if you prefer to set them in a V
position ,set them at about 60 degrees apart . I have also used hen hackle
tips and cut grizzly hackle for winds.......
I hope this was easy to
understand......Glenn
