Have been a bit under the weather so this is a few
days late.
Headed over to Crooked Creek Sunday afternoon. A small
cold front had gone through about 10 am that morning.
It was overcast and a bit cool till it cleared up,
then it got hot. It got up to 88F.
We had quite a bit of rain last week and we found the
Creek clear but running high and the current pretty
strong. I started off with a couple of nice Bluegills
on the Chili Pepper. Then caught two nice Smallmouths.
The fishing was good but the catching was kind of
slow. The other two friends with me had not done a
thing yet. I finally gave them each a CP and we headed
over to a fast run. Really thought we would do well on
that run on some Smallmouths, not a hit. About that
time a couple of guys came floating through in a boat.
Asked them how they were doing. They said they has a
ball till about 10:am when it just turned off. Said
they had C&R over 40 Smallies from about 6:30 am till
it quit about 10:am. That tells me that even a small
cold front will give the bass lockjaw. After fishing
that stretch as good as we could, we decided to head
down the Creek to another spot that was wider and the
current slower. Between the heat and fighting the
current, we were getting pretty tired. The spot we
picked was a wide gravel bar with shallower water, a
lot easier to wade and trees on the bank that gave us
some shade. There was a fast run just above the gravel
bar. Paul hit that run right off. I started off real
well at a pool off the gravel bar. Got three big Gills
on the first five casts. Bob had not caught a fish
till now, he got into a couple of Smallmouths and some
Gills. Paul did about the same. The heat finally got
to us and we quit about 4:00. I ended up with 17 Gills
and two Smallmouths. This is the least number of
Smallmouths I have gotten on the last four trips to
Crooked Creek. I am sure the front that went through
had something to do with it.
All fish were caught on the CP.
All in all, it was a good day on the creek.
Tony
