A good replacement for the improved clinch knot, which works well with larger hooks, is the Palomar knot. According to Lefty Kreh, and others, it's just about the strongest simple knot there is for tying to the hook. There are instructions for tying it at http://www.fish4fun.com/palomarknot.htm. It's hard to use on a small hook, but anything size 10 or up it's pretty easy. I've never had one untie or break off.
