Tony,
I have gone through the last Fly Tyer magazine and cannot find the ad. What page was it on?

I saw an ad in Fly Tyer for a free sample of Mayfly
Spent Wing Material so I sent for a sample. I figured
it would be some kind of foam. I got a nice sample
last week and it is real thin sheet foam. I figured it
was packing foam like I had used in the past but this
seemed to be more supple and it just feels different.
I have been using Antron yarn for the "sail" wings on
the fishing version of my Knitpikin Mayflies and
Denny's JV Hen feathers for the "show" version. I have
been told, some of the "show" versions have been
fished with no ill effects to the wing. The JV hen
feathers make beautiful wings, it is just a bit more
work making them up. I have been looking for something
to replace the Antron for the fishing version. I made
up some of the mayflies with the new wing and sent
them to the person I got the material from. He E
mailed me back yesterday and said they were some of
the best he has seen.
I tied at a public show yesterday and had a couple of
them on display. I was repeatedly asked to tie them.
The more I used this foam for the wings the more I was
impressed with it. Most of the packing foam I have
used is easily cut with the 10/0 thread I use. I had
no problem at all with this foam, never cut through
any of the wings I tied on.
I am just passing on this info, maybe someone will be
interested in tying with it. Check Fly Tyer magazine
for the free sample AD, he aslo sends a spent wing
Mayfly made with this material with the sample. The
guy is in Ohio, I talked to him on the phone last
night, we had a lot in common including age. LOL
Yes I did order some.
Tony
