Following excerpted from Badger Creek Fly Tying August Newsletter by Mike Hogue: -
I was sent an email by Toni Spezio of Arkansas (formerly of NJ) a while back. He has been bragging about his Chili Pepper fly which is a very nasty looking wooly bugger. I tied some and used them in some of the very dark colored water after the recent rains we had. Some of the water looked like coal it was so dark. Anyway, I had to look up this silly fly in the new Woolly Wisdom by Gary Soucie. Guess what it worked! Almost too well. I've caught chain pickerel, crappies ( 10"ers!), largemouth, smallies, a few odd warmouths, bluegills and a few perch. This fly is troutless for me so far but I suspect that I will catch some fall run fish with this one. Not bad for a beer fly ( those are ones you design by drinking alot of beer, or bottled water as they like to call it in Wisconsin.) I'll give you the pattern I used: 9672, size 8, gold bead 5/32, copper chenille, brown hackle, copper Krystal flash in the tail, rusty ginger/copper marabou, fire flo orange thread 6/0. Email me if you catch anything on this thing. I will send it on to Toni. I can't say that this is the best fly I ever tried but it has worked this year in the nasty water. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Stuff for sale: Chili Pepper Materials: 6/0 fire orange thread: $1.50 Copper Chenille: $1.75 Rusty Brown Blood Marabou: $2.00 Hareline Brown Woolly Saddle: $16.50 Gold Beads: $2.25 Copper Krystal Flash: $3.50 Get the whole set for $25.00!!!!!! as an added bonus, I will toss in one extra card of copper crystal chenille.
