Tom,

Luckily I missed the family's first experience with the Dobsonfly on the Redbank River, just upstream from the mouth. My parents had a tradition of camping on their pontoon boat over the 4th of July weekend. The first time they camped on the Redbank, my brother in law had to lob a few back across the river with a ball bat. Apparently it made an interesting PING when struck with an aluminum bat. Needless to say, they slept with the walls down that night. According to some links, the adults will bite as well and can break skin too. I haven't been back since the last time I went boat camping, so I haven't worried tooo much about making some sort of fly for either the adult or nymph.

BTW -- if you put 1/2 doz hellgrammites in a glass jar overnight, you will end up with one very full hellgrammite in the morning. They are the king of mean when it comes to aquatic bugs in my book!

Nope. If those things were emerging from the lake, I doubt I would stay in it! It's about four inches to big. Ugly Bug! Thanks for the link and pics.

Tom,

I'm still wondering about the Dobsonfly http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dobsonfly -- it's a stonefly wanna be. It crawls out like a stonefly and drys on the foliage along the banks.
