But I will add (as somebody who gave up golf 5 years ago because it interfered with fishing) that at least while being wet and numb in the river, joy reigns supreme when you at least have a hit, and that can carry through the day.  Additionally, the scenery is oh so much nicer than a trimmed golf course.

With golfing, you can have a great hole early on, and suck the rest of the way, and the rest of the day sucks as a result!

Golfers spend hours knocking an innocent little ball across the landscape, often getting wet and numb in the process, and return home with nothing to show for their efforts. Fishermen, on the other hand, spend hours dragging an innocent herring through the water, often getting wet and numb in the process, often getting wet and numb in the process, and return home with nothing to show for their efforts. On successful days in both sports, joy reigns supreme because the participant has triumphed through enormous adversity, but at least the fisherman's rush comes from outsmarting something that has a nervous system."
