Just wanted to let ya'll know that I'll be gone
all next week to Philmont Scout Ranch, at Cimarron, NM for a week-long trout
trip. This is the 14th year that myself and a group of friends and a couple
of my sons have made the annual jaunt to fish the trout streams at Philmont.
I leave this Sunday and will return next Sunday. While there, we'll be in
the "Back Country" and will be staying in Zastrow Lodge, a large log cabin
with a huge rock fireplace. The Rayado River is only a couple hundred feet
from the south porch of the cabin, and that's where we'll fish. Because
of my feet, I'll be fishing the lower reaches of the Rayado, with my best
friend Steve Taylor from Asheville, NC. Steve had a serious head injury
a couple years back and his balance isn't what it used to be. The rest of
our group will fish the upper Rayado, where there's lots of pocket water,
deep pools and rougher wading, but much larger fish.
We used to count fish, but several years ago, when five of us caught in excess of 700 rainbows in four days, we quit counting. Of course, all our fishing is strictly catch and release, and we fish with barbless hooks. We don't catch anything much over 12 ", but an occassional 18" does get landed. We cook our meals over an open fire. As most of you'll agree, food cooked over campfire always tastes better. While the days are fun, the nights are a blast, for that'w when we break out the cigars and the BS starts flying.
I'll post a full report when I return next week. If anyone wants to handle the Quote for the Day while I'm gone that'd be great. Rick ? Also, for the Joke for the Day Club. Which one of you Alan, Allan, etc. want to handle it for me?

P.S. Tony, I'm taking a couple Chili Peppers along. We'll see how the BOY SCOUT FISH react to them. :-P
