DonO and all: apologies all around. DonO: I was not questioning the
serious side of your work, or any one else's work. And please take the
description of "silly" in the kind tone it was intended. Never meant to
offend.

Larry,
I think he was referring to Don Bastian, not me. You are sort of
correct
about my tying (but most of the time you are watching Dr. D tying- not
DonO). I really don't have a 'serious' side in tying, but I do have a
practical side- once in a while (as DonO). My hobby- flyfishing &
flytying'- is just that- a hobby- and does not have a serious side.
My
consulting work (career) has all of the seriousness I need, so I don't
need
any more from my hobby. The one comment I get the most is "You're
having
way too much fun". Guilty as charged (even if it comes across as
'silly').
And I really pity the poor guy who's sitting there, whether tying or
watching, who is 'serious' about what he's doing (maybe unless he's a
professional tier for a living). My hobby serves to help me unwind
from the
pressures I face in daily work, and to have it put any pressure on me
at all
(resulting from seriousness) would be counter to its purpose.
Once in a while I get the urge to tie some practical flies in public-
mostly
demonstrating the rope-dub using Whiting products, deer-hair
stacking/sculpting, realistic stoneflies, or size 32's. Some people
consider that 'serious tying', but I really don't. And anyone who's
spent
any time with me at the shows knows that the Baits Hotel- by attendee
request- is the most popular part of my table or booth. And too, I get
a
lot of enjoyment giving stuff away ("more happinessin giving"... sort
of
thing), sharing tying techniques, and interacting with people who have
a
sense of humor like mine.
DonO
