"Suppose you took a very light rod and stuck a heavy weight on your line. To cast any distance you'd really have to "wait" for the rod. You'd have to swing it pretty darn slowly to get the best from its flex action; your timing would have to be right on the nose to put the bait way out there among the fish every time. Now put a series of progressively lighter weights on the line. The lighter the weight, the faster you can swing the rod, and timing becomes less critical to achieving good distance. Maybe you'll never get quite as far out with the lighter weights as you could with a perfectly timed cast using the heaviest tackle. But it's a safe bet your "average" distance is going to be better with the lighter tackle, simply because it is effective even when slightly mistimed. If your distance still doesn't satisfy you, you still have another option: a heavier rod. This will increase your leverage by putting more weight into your hands relative to the weight at the end of the line. In that way you might outdistance even your best casts with the lighter tackle. And, again it more than likely would increase your control. Both in fishing and in golf, once you have developed a sound repeating swing, there is a specific relationship of rod or shaft strength to tackle or clubhead weight that will help ou to cast or hit closest to your best most consistently. In both sports, of course, direction is as important as distance. Thus your ideal equipment must alwys represent a compromise between power and control."

Sounds like Jack approaches fishing just like he does golf. Very analytical and I've heard that he's a helluva a salt water fly fisher.

Have a Great Day,
